When Has Being Ordinary Ever Gotten You Anywhere?
Why playing it safe steals your potential — and how embracing your extraordinary self changes everything
I used to try so hard to blend in. To follow the path everyone expected. To be “safe.”
The middle ground was sold to me as stability. Ordinary was framed as protection. It was the predictable career, the socially acceptable hobbies, the life that wouldn’t invite criticism.
And for years, I believed it.
Until I realized what that “safety” was costing me: my alignment. My potential. My impact.
Ordinary is Just Another Word for Compliance
Think about it: when you play it safe, you’re not living — you’re conforming.
The edges of your personality, the specific calls of your Dharma, the parts of you that could light up a room, a career, a community… they get suppressed.
I know because I’ve lived it.
I followed the conventional script for years. Stable career. Check. Socially approved lifestyle. Check. Paychecks that made my parents proud. Check.
On paper, it looked perfect. On the inside, I was hollow.
The Hidden Cost of Playing Safe
Have you ever paused and asked yourself: Why am I working a draining job? Why am I keeping up appearances?
When has being ordinary every gotten you what you truly wanted?
If you’re chasing a dream job, do you think the “ordinary” resume, the checklist of qualifications, the generic experience will get you noticed?
No.
It’s the project you poured your curiosity into, the unusual skill you obsessively mastered, the bold idea that makes someone stop and pay attention — that is what opens doors.
The same goes for relationships, creative work, or any calling that truly matters. Playing the “ordinary” role attracts people who love the mask, not your soul.
Your extraordinary self — fully visible, fully alive — is what draws the right people, the right opportunities, and the right life.
The Extraordinary Path is Less Crowded
Here’s a secret: most people are paralyzed by conformity. They wait for permission, follow the predictable script, and blend into the background.
But when you step into your edges, when you honor your weird, when you pursue what lights you up — suddenly, the space around you clears. You’re not competing with 5,000 others. You’re standing out in a way that’s unavoidable.
That “extraordinary” path isn’t just more fulfilling — it’s strategically smarter. Boldness creates visibility. Passion creates leverage. Authenticity opens doors that compliance never will.
Playing Safe Can Cost You Everything
The greatest failure isn’t missing a goal; it’s hitting a goal you never actually cared about.
I know that feeling intimately. For years, I stayed “safe,” building a stable career and earning accolades that looked impressive to my family and community.
But those weren’t my goals. They were someone else’s script.
Today, I’m messy. I’m building a blog, launching a coaching practice, facing visibility and vulnerability every day. It’s uncertain. It’s not safe. But every small step toward authenticity fills me in ways a predictable paycheck never could.
Being extraordinary isn’t about being better than anyone else. It’s about being more yourself than anyone else.
Society Wants You to Fit In — But Your Dharma Won’t
Since childhood, we’ve been taught that “common” is superior. That the crowd knows best. That safety = success.
But society survives because of diversity, not conformity. We need the rebels, the healers, the late bloomers, the visionaries — not just administrators.
If you suppress your unique brilliance to fit in, the world loses something only you can offer. And you lose your life in the process.
Extraordinary isn’t a performance. It’s an alignment with your true self.
The universe rewards courage, not compliance. Being extraordinary means:
Honoring your quirks because they are clues to your purpose
Setting boundaries with people who want you to stay “small”
Choosing impact over comfort, growth over approval
Stop racing for middle ground that doesn’t exist. Start living the life your Dharma designed — even if it’s messy at first.
Lead With Your Extraordinary
Reflection: Think about a time you played it safe to get a job, a date, or a friendship. Did it work? If it did, did you feel alive, or just performing?
Action: Identify one “un-ordinary” trait you usually hide. This week, lead with it. Share it in a meeting, approach a project differently, spend your weekend in a way that feels true to you. Notice how it feels to stop performing and start living.
Your extraordinary life is waiting. You just have to be brave enough to step into it. I’m always here to help. Apply for a free coaching session. I’ll help you navigate the messy, beautiful, courageous path to living extraordinary.

This resonated with me far too much. I too was that girl who checked all the boxes. Everything looked perfect on the outside, but chronic illness was breaking me down, while I was trying to hold it all together. Now I’ve been letting go of all those inherited scripts and letting my dharma lead, as it was always meant to. Thank you for this powerful share 🔥we got this 🙌🏽😊
